There is a possibility waterborne trade will decline if additive manufacturing—3D printing—renders practical the generation of products near or even at the point of use. In that case there would be less need for shipping finished items, though bulk transport of raw materials still would be required. Large amounts of 3D printing in homes, schools, and offices sounds far-fetched—seriously, the gym teacher makes the soccer ball by pressing a button at her desk? But when the expensive, constantly malfunctioning Xerox 914 went on sale in 1959, the idea that cheap and reliable photocopiers would become ubiquitous was far-fetched.

Supposing manufacturing will matter for many generations, ocean trade will matter for many generations: why this is good is the subject of the next chapter. Unless we disagreeable human beings foul everything up, which will be the subject of the final chapter.
